Founder & Owner of Language By Design

Karen O’Neal has dedicated her professional career to helping people work more effectively by enhancing their language and communication skills. Based in Silicon Valley, she founded Language By Design in 1997 in order to provide communication coaching to high-tech companies in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

Karen brings to her work a passion for the diverse people and cultures of the world. Growing up in a family that traveled and lived overseas, she was exposed to many cultures during her childhood. Her love of travel continues as an adult. She has lived and worked on five continents and studied six languages. She majored in French and has a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from UCLA.

Before starting her business, Karen worked for over a decade in higher education, teaching oral and written communication at universities including UCLA, Stanford, San Jose State University and UC Santa Cruz extension, as well as several Bay Area colleges. Her strong academic background differentiates Karen’s approach to corporate training; her programs are steeped in pedagogy that translates into results.

Karen brings a patient, collaborative spirit to her coaching, inspiring her clients to achieve their goals while increasing their confidence. She takes genuine pleasure in helping others lead more successful and rewarding lives.
